NBA drops nuclear sanctions on Los Angeles Clippers over salary cap violations involving Kawhi Leonard

Leonard's former business manager, Dennis Robertson, was found to have pressured the franchise into providing these parallel financial benefits, which itself constitutes a salary cap circumvention violation.

The penalties are staggering. The Clippers must forfeit five consecutive first-round draft picks, spanning 2029 through 2033. The franchise was also hit with a $30 million fine.

Owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended from all league and team activities for one year. The NBA determined he knowingly helped Leonard secure off-court income and approved a business deal he understood was a precondition for a sponsorship arrangement with Aspiration.

Gillian Zucker, the team's president of business operations, received a one-year suspension without pay for her direct role in the illicit arrangements and for providing false and misleading statements to investigators. Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations, was suspended without pay for six months for his involvement in the prohibited agreements and for approving unauthorized expenses.

Leonard himself must pay $700,000 to the league, a figure some observers consider relatively modest given the scope of the scheme. Robertson has been banned from any interaction with NBA teams and their affiliates for five years. The organization will also be placed under a league-supervised compliance and monitoring program for the next five years.

Commissioner Adam Silver did not hold back, stating that the collectively bargained player compensation system is a foundational pillar of competition and expressing deep disappointment over the flagrant violations and institutional leadership failures within the Clippers organization.

The NBA and NBPA reached an agreement confirming that these sanctions are final and binding for all parties. However, the Wachtell Lipton investigation reportedly remains ongoing, and the league has reserved the right to impose additional measures should new evidence surface.

It is worth noting that the Clippers were already considered repeat offenders when it comes to salary cap circumvention violations, which likely factored into the severity of the punishment.
