James Neal may have been the first player to be fined by the NHL for diving, but he certainly will not be the last. In an effort to eliminate diving from hockey, the league revised its protocol when it comes to punishment. A first offence comes with a warning and a $1000 fine. For repeat offenders a $2000 fine is imposed and the players name is released to the public. According to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox, there are 22 players that have been warned once for diving this season. The possibility of more names being released is fairly likely. These 22 players are all at risk. Although no one but Neal has yet to be named, one name that has been in circulation is Evgeni Malkin. On Saturday night Malkin was twice penalized for diving. Each dive is individually analyzed and discipline can be assessed after the fact. A committee of nine representatives from hockey and player operations judge the dive. If six voters agree that a case is a dive, a fine is imposed.
