Patrick Kane may have cost the Red Wings their season with one of the dumbest plays of the year.
Boy oh boy this is going to be a tough pill to swallow for fans of the Detroit Red Wings.
On Sunday, the Red Wings faced off against a very tough Minnesota Wild team in what was a must-win game for the Red Wings. The Red Wings are in a desperate fight for their playoff lives and need every point they can get, and unfortunately things would get off to a terrible start.
The Wild would take a commanding 4-1 lead over the Red Wings but in a great show of resilience the Red Wings would march all the way back in the game's third and final period to tie the score up at 4 goals a piece. It would be Red Wings veteran forward Patrick Kane who would play the hero, finding the back of the net with just over 5 minutes left in the third period.
The heroics from Kane would be short lived however as moments later he would make one of the most inexplicable decisions of his hockey career. With the game on the line, and perhaps even the season in the case of the Red Wings, Kane would take a penalty away from the play for tripping Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes as he headed back to the bench.
Kane's reckless penalty would prove costly as Kirill Kaprizov would collect a hat trick on the ensuing power play, denying the Red Wings even so much as a single point after their valiant comeback earlier in the game.
Ouch.
