Two very large men drop the gloves on Saturday afternoon.
Fans who tuned in to the National Hockey League's early games on Saturday were treated to a heavyweight showdown during the first game of the day, a clash between the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers, but Red Wings fans may not be too happy with their involvement in this one.
It was Red Wings veteran defenseman Ben Chiarot who was the instigator in this one with Chiarot losing control of his stick during the game's third period, much to the displeasure of Rangers forward Will Cuylle. Cuylle was so unhappy in fact that he would square up with Chiarot to let him know, eventually leading to the two men dropping the gloves.
Both men are what you would call large with both of them measuring in at 6'3 tall, with Chiarot having a slight size advantage at 222 lbs compared to just 212 for Cuylle, making this one a true heavyweight showdown. It was hard to determine a winner as well with Chiarot having control early and landing the better shots, but Cuylle turning it around late and seemingly taking control over the more experienced Chiarot.
As I mentioned the Red Wings likely weren't too happy about this one with Chiarot earning an extra 2 minute minor as a result of this interaction. In fact that Rangers would score on the ensuing power play to take a 3-0 lead over Detroit in what is a must win game for the Red Wings.
