Breaking: Major controversy in Game 5 after goal review.

NHL reviews a goal, but was the right call made.

There is no doubt going to be plenty of debate after this call.

On Saturday night the Boston Bruins were facing off against the Columbus Blue Jackets in a very important Game 5 in their second round series in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. It has been a back and forth series thus far between these two teams and Game 5 proved to be no different with neither team ever really taking a commanding lead during regulation play. That was in part however thanks to a rather controversial call from the National Hockey League officials during the game's 3rd period.

The Bruins had just taken a 2 - 0 lead in the 3rd period and looked to be taking over control of the game at that point when a seemingly routine save from Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask turned into a rather big controversy. You see Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones had just tossed the puck on net from a seemingly impossible angle and it looked like Rask had made the save, and in fact the call on the ice had been no goal. Upon closer inspection it looked as though the puck may have crossed the goal line and as a result the National Hockey League officials out on the ice headed made the call upstairs and this play went to a review.

What makes this such a controversy is the fact that this was called as no goal on the ice, as the video replay made it extremely difficult to see anything that could genuinely be considered "conclusive video evidence." Now do not get me wrong here, I am certain that based on the position of the puck that it did in fact cross the goal line, however there was understandably some objection from the Bruins bench and the Bruins fans at TD Garden after the officials came back with their decision.

In spite of the fact that you could not conclusively see the puck cross the goal line the officials determined that the video evidence was enough to get them to overturn the call that had originally been made on the ice. This would cut the lead to just 1 for the Blue Jackets, and given how the rest of the period played out that proved to be extremely important.
