Breaking: Victor Hedman taken out of the game by a referee!

The Tampa Bay Lightning are having a bit of a rough night.

Not only is the National Hockey League's best team taking a beating at the hands of the New York Islanders this evening but they have lost one of the most important members of their core group of players to a freak injury. The Lightning are in New York on Sunday night to take on the Islanders at the Barclays Center and as things currently stand the Islanders appear well on their way to a win with a 4 - 1 win but the big concern of the night will be regarding the status of star defenseman Victor Hedman.

Hedman was injured during the opening minutes of the first period and initially it was unclear what exactly had happened to him as it seemed to take place away from the play. That being said though it was clear that Hedman was in fact hurting as he could be seen on the Lightning bench for several long moments, hunched over and clutching at his head. Hedman seemed to be favoring either his eye or his head in general and for that reason it was rather difficult to ascertain exactly what kind of injury he had suffered.

The video replay however provided some insight when it was revealed that Hedman had collided with one of the National Hockey League officials on the ice, something that you simply can not cause when you are supposed to be impartially officiating the contest. It wasn't a particularly massive collision by any stretch of the imagination, both men appeared to be at cruising speed when they hit one another, and neither Hedman nor the official went down as a result of the contact.

That being said though Hedman's head appeared to take the worst of the blow and it appears that either he was rocked or he just so happened to get hit in the right spot and suffered some kind of damage to the eye he appeared to be favoring. The Lightning would confirm a short while later that Hedman would not return to the game as a result of the injury he suffered in this contest, hopefully it won't turn out to be serious.
