"The Legend of the Octopus" can be traced back to the 1952 playoffs when a National Hockey League team played two best-of-seven series in order to win the Stanley Cup. It was meant to symbolize the amount of victories necessary for the Red Wings to capture the prized trophy. To this day it remains as relevant as ever and is a staple in the lore of the Red Wings.
