You just can’t look away!
The Colorado Avalanche picked up a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night, but the biggest talking point had nothing to do with the final score.
Nathan MacKinnon and Roope Hintz dropped the gloves in a heated second-period brawl that left the Avalanche superstar gushing blood and heading straight to the locker room for medical attention.
He reportedly came away from the exchange with a broken nose, and the evidence was impossible to miss after the game.
MacKinnon's postgame interview painted a vivid picture of the damage. His face was visibly swollen, his nose clearly battered, yet there he was, sitting in front of the cameras and fielding questions like it was any other night. Despite having a broken nose, MacKinnon still showed up for what amounted to roughly the 1,254th media session of his career.
Hintz did not walk away clean, either. The Stars forward was spotted in the penalty box bleeding from busted knuckles, and he appeared to have gotten the better of the exchange on the ice.
There is real history fueling this rivalry. Last March, a physical confrontation between the two players behind the play resulted in Hintz suffering a torn hamstring. That injury cost him the rest of the regular season and Dallas's entire first-round playoff series against the Minnesota Wild. Whether Tuesday's fight was simmering payback or simply two fierce competitors boiling over remains an open question.
Remarkably, MacKinnon returned to the game before the second period ended, though his nose still looked rough even after treatment in the dressing room. It was already his second fight of the young season, a surprising trend for a player who has traditionally been known more for his skill than his fists.
In the postgame scrum, MacKinnon was characteristically lighthearted about the whole ordeal. "The way we all grow up in the Maritimes, it's pretty gritty, most guys from that area are pretty feisty," he said. "Getting punched isn't that fun, but the guys seem to like it, so maybe I'll do it a couple more times."
Fans online ate it up. Plus, both teams are set for an immediate rematch at Ball Arena, and while it seems unlikely MacKinnon will be dropping the gloves again so soon, nobody would be shocked if tensions spill over once more.
