Even though his departure from the Wings didn't leave things on the best of terms, there's no denying that Sergei Federov is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Red Wings uniform. Federov began his career in Detroit in the craziest of ways, when playing in the Goodwill Games in 1990 The Red Wings essentially stole him from the Soviet Union by sneaking him out of his hotel and getting him onto a plane to Detroit. It was a huge gamble for both sides, but Federov quickly became one of, if not  the greatest NHL players of his generation. In 1994 he won the Hart trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, the Selke for being the best defensive forward in the game and the Lester B. Pearson award, for most outstanding player as voted by his peers. He was also second in scoring that year, which is pretty good considering the scoring leader that season was none other than NHL legend Wayne Gretzky. Federov was so solid defensively that then head coach Scotty Bowman would sometimes play him on the blue line, and even commented that if Fedrov had ever played a ful lseason as a defenseman he would have added a Norris trophy to his impressive list of hardware. To this day Federov is among the top 5 Detroit players all tiem for scoring, assists, and points. Here is a rare glimpse of a young Fedrov describing his early days as a Red Wing.
