Rooney may want some revenge after this.

I've got to be honest, although this was fun to watch I don't think it was the best idea for Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson in the long term.

On Sunday night Gibson and his Ducks faced off against the New Jersey Devils in a battle between two teams that realistically have no real shot of making it into the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. As a result of their respective positions in the standings you would have expected this to be a relatively tepid affair between the two teams, but for whatever reason it seems that Gibson got a little heated in the closing moments of the game's second period.

The Devils had just dumped the puck into the Ducks' zone and it was New Jersey Devils forward Kevin Rooney who looked like he was going to be first on the puck, that is at least until Gibson stepped into the equation in a major way. Not satisfied to merely beat Rooney to the puck and subsequently making a play with that puck, Gibson instead used his large frame to absolutely level the New Jersey Devils forward with a big hit behind the net. Of course this was blatant interference on the part of Gibson and unfortunately for Rooney the hit likely had far more impact than it would have otherwise due to the fact that it came from an entirely unexpected source.

Believe it or not though Gibson was not merely satisfied with crushing Rooney with a big hit, and decided he would add insult to injury after the fact as well. Gibson followed the downed Rooney down to the ice delivering a pair of blows to the back of his head as he fell on top of the Devils forward, but that still was not enough. It then appeared as though Gibson leaned in close so he could get a few words in with Rooney, and something tells me he was not whispering sweet nothings into Rooney's ears at that moment.

This is a textbook example of adding insult to injury, but you have to wonder how the Devils players will treat Gibson the next time they face him given that he was so willing to take liberties with one of their own.
