A 5 minute major and an ejection, but will a suspension be next?
The Ottawa Senators were no doubt fuming after their loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night, one in which they held a commanding 3 - 0 lead only to let it evaporate and allow 6 unanswered goals from the Ducks before it was all said and done.
There was no clearer sign of frustration during the Senators' 6 - 3 loss on Sunday night however than the late hit delivered by Senators forward Dylan Cozens on Anaheim Ducks forward AJ Greer. The hit came late in the third period and was delivered a few seconds late after Greer had gotten rid of the puck, earning Cozens both a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct.
It looked pretty bad initially with Greer sprawled out on the ice as if he was completely unconscious, but he would eventually jump back up and was looking for revenge.
Although Greer appeared to be ok given his anger, something wasn't right and he didn't take another shift and eventually left the game following the hit from Cozens.
While it wasn't the most vicious hit, the timing of the late hit from Cozens, after the Ducks has just rattled off 5 straight goals and well into their comeback, does make it look pretty bad. Whether or not the NHL's Department of Player Safety chooses to get involved here remains to be seen.
For what it's worth, Cozens did seem to go shoulder to shoulder and there did not appear to be any intent to injure from what I can see, I think 5 and a game is plenty in this scenario. Let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments.
