Dylan Larkin gets mercilessly booed by Detroit fans in home opener

It did not go smoothly, to say the least. Brutal!

The Detroit Red Wings kicked off their 2026-27 season on Friday night against the New York Rangers, but the loudest moment inside Little Caesars Arena had nothing to do with the action on the ice.

Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade out of Detroit during the offseason and was subsequently stripped of the captaincy, was greeted with resounding boos from the home crowd.

The reception was unmistakable. Fans made their feelings known about the 30-year-old center who spent 11 seasons with the franchise and ranks 10th in team history with 643 points.

Larkin had been dealing with an upper-body injury that kept him out of all preseason action and was initially ruled out for the first two games of the regular season.

The crowd's reaction spoke volumes about how the trade request has landed with the fanbase. But some say it was well-deserved.

The situation surrounding Larkin has been a slow burn all offseason. He initially limited his preferred destinations to just four teams, Minnesota, Florida, Vegas and Carolina, before reportedly expanding that list to eight clubs. Every team on his expanded list is based in the United States, which has made facilitating a deal even more complicated.

Larkin still has five years remaining on the eight-year, $69.6 million contract he signed in 2023, complete with a full no-movement clause. Reports suggest that Detroit's asking price has softened somewhat, but several of Larkin's preferred destinations are dealing with tight cap situations that make a trade difficult to execute in the near term.

The boos at Little Caesars Arena serve as a stark reminder of how quickly the relationship between a franchise icon and a fanbase can sour when a trade demand enters the picture.
