Every hockey parent dreams of the moment their child steps onto NHL ice for the first time. For Angela and Blaine Peterson, that dream came true on Tuesday night in Ottawa. But the emotions that followed were not exactly what anyone would have scripted.

Their son, St. Louis Blues rookie Dylan Peterson, dropped the gloves with Senators defenseman Jorian Donovan late in the third period of a 7-2 Blues victory. The two exchanged a long, spirited sequence of jabs and haymakers while the family watched from the front row.

When the television broadcast cut to the family after the fight, the contrast was impossible to miss. Peterson's father, Blaine, appeared to relish every second of the scrap. Angela, however, grew visibly more distressed as the punches flew, eventually placing both hands on top of her head in a classic gesture of parental panic. Peterson's sisters, Justine, Cassandra, and Tessa, also looked shaken.

The Blues leaned into the moment on social media, posting the family's reaction on X with the playful caption: "THAT'S MY BOY!!!" attributed to Mom.

The debut carried extra meaning for the 24-year-old forward, who spent part of his childhood playing minor hockey in the Ottawa area. A third-round pick by St. Louis in the 2020 NHL Draft, Peterson spent four seasons at Boston University before turning professional. He was in his fourth minor-league campaign with the Springfield Thunderbirds when the Blues recalled him after forward Dillon Dube was ruled out for eight weeks with a neck injury.

Slotted on the fourth line alongside Ross Johnston and Pius Suter, he logged 8:57 of ice time, registered four hits, and picked up five penalty minutes.

In a fun footnote, his opponent, Donovan, is the son of former NHL player Shean Donovan, who reportedly attended the game as an analyst for the TSN broadcast. Jorian Donovan is also a young rookie.

Dylan Peterson certainly made the most of his NHL debut.
