The three-time Stanley Cup champion delivered a heartfelt farewell.
One of the most respected players of his generation has officially said goodbye.
Jonathan Toews announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, bringing an end to a remarkable 16-season career that included three Stanley Cups, Olympic gold medals, and a place among the greatest leaders the game has ever seen.
Standing before reporters at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex in his hometown of Winnipeg, the 38-year-old delivered an emotional farewell that reflected on both the triumphs and challenges that defined his journey.
"It's a privilege to be standing up here to say goodbye to the game of hockey and the NHL," Toews said.
Despite finishing his career with the Winnipeg Jets, Toews spent much of his retirement announcement reflecting on his years with the Chicago Blackhawks, repeatedly mentioning former teammates and the organization where he became a hockey icon.
The former Blackhawks captain leaves the game with an incredible résumé:
While fans will remember the championships and accolades, Toews made it clear that the most difficult years of his career may have taught him the most.
The final chapter of his NHL journey was marked by significant health battles, including long COVID and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), conditions that sidelined him for extended periods and left many wondering if he would ever play again.
"The last few years have been extremely difficult," Toews admitted.
Yet those struggles also shaped his perspective.
"I feel like I've learned so much more about myself and about my life through the low points than when my career was at its heights."
After missing two full seasons, Toews made an inspiring return with his hometown Winnipeg Jets in 2025-26, appearing in all 82 games and recording 29 points. For many fans, simply seeing him back on NHL ice was one of the feel-good stories of the season.
He closed his retirement announcement with a heartfelt message to the city that raised him.
"I'm so proud to be from Winnipeg. Thank you for making this year so special. I hope I represented you well."
With that, one of the defining captains of the modern NHL officially stepped away from the game.
Few players leave behind a legacy as complete as Jonathan Toews. Three Stanley Cups. Two Olympic gold medals. Countless moments of leadership. And now, one final standing ovation.
Happy retirement Toews!
