We often complain that hockey players give boring generic answers, but last night Eric Staal may have been a little too honest during his post game interview. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet tweeted out a link to the video from the Hurricanes post game and in it Staal clearly admits that he was aiming for Dion Phaneuf when taking the slap shot that led to an empty net goal.
"I knew it was him standing there." Staal said. "I was either putting it in by him or hitting him with a good one."
Bold words from a player who engaged Phaneuf but seemed not the least bit interested in taking on the Leafs defenseman. Not to mention admitting you were potentially looking to injure a player just doesn't sound good. Phaneuf and the Leafs will have to wait until February 20th to get heir revenge. If for some reason you want the full Staal interview you can see it here courtesy of the Hurricanes. [iframe id="" mode="normal"]
