Philadelphia continues to unravel at the worst possible time in the series.
The Philadelphia Flyers’ power-play woes were on full display again Thursday night in Game 3 against the Carolina Hurricanes, and this time, it came back to haunt them in brutal fashion.
In the second period, Carolina’s Taylor Hall was sent to the penalty box for boarding after a heavy hit on Travis Sanheim, giving Philadelphia a golden opportunity to shift momentum. Instead, it quickly turned into the opposite.
While the Flyers looked to capitalize with the man advantage, it was the Hurricanes who struck instead. Jalen Chatfield buried a short-handed goal to not only kill the penalty, but swing the lead right back in Carolina’s favour, silencing any building momentum in the building.
The moment immediately sparked criticism online and from analysts, with frustration over Philadelphia’s special teams boiling over yet again.
“Just absolutely inexcusable that this power play is still this bad,” wrote Kevin Kurz.
“Flyers might have the worst power play of all time,” added Pete Blackburn.
For a team trying to stay competitive in this second-round playoff series, moments like this are becoming impossible to ignore. Instead of generating pressure with the extra skater, the Flyers are finding themselves vulnerable and opponents are taking full advantage.
At this point, special teams should be the difference-maker, but right now, that edge is clearly not going Philadelphia’s way.
Carolina can sweep this series on Saturday with a brutal 3-0 lead over the poor Flyers, who desperately need to improve on special teams.
