What a tough guy.

As fans of the sport of hockey will already know that hockey produces some of the toughest athletes on the planet but over the week end Conor Garland may have taken that to a whole different level.

The Arizona Coyotes were in Edmonton, Alberta on Saturday night to take on the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place and it was a battle of 2 teams who are both still hoping that they can scratch and claw their way into the playoffs. In the case of the Coyotes they remain in the hunt for a Wild Card spot in spite of the fact that their roster has been decimated by injuries, including 3 of the team's top 4 centers, while the Oilers are trying to prevent another collapse under the leadership of general manager Peter Chiarelli.

Unfortunately for the Oilers in spite of the fact that they were facing off against a very depleted Coyotes roster they were unable to pick up the win on home ice, thanks in large part to some heroic from Coyotes winger Conor Garland. Garland picked up a pair of goals on the night and that was enough to lead his team to a 3 - 2 victory over an Oilers team that appears to be in some major need of changes at the top echelons of the organization.

What was interesting however was that Garland's biggest goal of the night came as the result of a total freak accident, the kind of fluke that he likely would not want to repeat if he could avoid it. Garland was posted up on the side of the net as his team fired off shots on the Edmonton goal, attempting to get one past the goaltender, and although they were successful it came with a big price tag for Garland himself. The young forward was struck in the head by one of those shots, causing the puck to deflect into the Oilers net and probably leaving Garland with a pretty solid headache after the fact.

Garland showed he was tough as nails however, conducting a post game interview shortly after he had taken a puck to the head. The craziest part however is that it didn't even look like Garland had taken the time to get repairs as he was still bleeding from his face as he gave the interview. That is one tough s.o.b.
