Ducks and Canes get into a full linen scrum and the netminders Frederik Andersen and Lukas Dostal decided to get into the mix.
The end of the second period of the late Thursday night game between the Carolina Hurricanes and Ducks in Anaheim offered fans something they weren’t expecting. The whistle blew but tempers flared, leading to all players finding a dancing partner, and even the goalies got involved.
Canes netminder Frederik Andersen saw the scrum erupt right in front of him and decided to come to the defence of his teammates. He was however first shoved to the ice, but went back for more.
Ducks young goaltender Lukas Dostal didn’t think that was fair and skated over to even things up. The two goalies exchanged some words, and fans hoped it would lead to a goalie fight.
The officials, who were already busy separating players to get them back to their dressing rooms, immediately restrained the goalies, preventing all hockey fans out there the chance to witness a rare goalie fight.
Still, we came quite close as you can see in the videos below:
Once both teams were off the ice for the second intermission, referees counted up the penalty, ending the middle frame with a total of five different penalties, with a minor one to Andersen and another to Dostal, both for leaving the crease.
Gotta love seeing these guys standing up for their teammates, but I would have loved to see a goalie fight even more!
In the end, despite not dropping the glove and blocker for a fight, Andersen came out on top, with the Hurricanes’ 4-1 win over the Ducks.
