The video replay makes it looks even worse.
One of the National Hockey League's elite goal scorers had a hugely embarrassing moment last night.
Winnipeg Jets rookie forward Patrik Laine has taken the NHL by storm and shown the world he is a goal-scoring machine, but for a moment on Sunday night it appeared that his goal scoring instincts overrode his thinking for just a split second.
Laine recovered a big rebound given up by his own goaltender but, in a moment of apparent confusion, instead of controlling the puck he fired off a slap shot into his own net, giving the Edmonton Oilers the goal that would eventually be the difference in a 3-2 loss for the Jets.
It was a huge and costly mistake, but likely one the young forward will shake off as he continues to tear through the NHL.
