Fans in Long Island show Tavares they still haven't forgiven him.
They say that time heals all wounds... but someone may have forgotten to pass that memo on to hockey fans in Long Island, New York.
On Saturday, Tavares and the Maple Leafs traveled to Long Island to face off against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena and the fans in attendance were quick to remind Tavares of their long memories.
Tavares was mercilessly booed as soon as he touched the puck, with the Islanders faithful relentlessly taunting Tavares every single time the puck found itself on his stick. As you can hear in the video below, this wasn't a few isolated pockets of fans either:
Tavares of course Began his career with the New York Islanders after being selected 1st overall by the franchise at the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft and established himself as an NHL star in his first 9 NHL seasons, all of which were with the Islanders. That relationship would end in controversy however when Tavares left the team as a free agent, signing with his hometown Maple Leafs, a decision the Islanders fan base has clearly still not forgiven him for.
Tavares served as captain during his tenure with the Islanders and put up 272 goals and 349 assists for 621 points in his 669 regular season games with the Islanders, but I do wonder what his legacy in Long Island will be given the intense animosity that fan base still has him.
