A scary scene at the World Junior Championship.
A terrifying situation has just unfolded at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship.
On Saturday, during a game between the United States of America and Switzerland, 19 year old American defenseman Cole Hutson appeared to suffer a serious injury. Hutson was injured at roughly the midway point in the game, with just under 9 minutes remaining in the game's second period, when he was struck in the back of the head by a shot from above the face-off circle.
Based on the video replay it looks as though Hutson never saw the puck coming and was completely blindsided by the blow to the back of the head. Hutson would collapse to the ice and remained down for several long moments, all the while not appearing to move very much. Trainers and medical staff rushed out to assist Hutson, but eventually the stretcher was rolled out onto the ice and Hutson was loaded onto the stretcher and helped off the ice with it's assistance.
Here is a look at the replay of what caused the injury:
Cole Hutson is of course the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens star defenseman Lane Hutson and Edmonton Oilers forward Quinn Hutson, making this an incident that is already have a tremendous impact on the hockey community.
Update: Hutson was conscious when he left the ice, confirmed by U.S. captain Brodie Ziemer who says he was able to communicate with Hutson as he was being helped off the ice. Hutson is currently in hospital and we will bring you more updates as they become available.
