Lawson Crouse in bad shape after going head first into the boards.

This one looks really bad, hopefully Arizona Coyotes forward Lawson Crouse is going to be ok.

On Saturday night the Coyotes faced off against the Los Angeles Kings and through the first two periods of action things were going pretty well for the Coyotes. It was in the opening minute of the game's third period however that things took a dark turn when Crouse suffered what appeared to be a very serious injury. The initial incident looked so bad that you could tell the Coyotes broadcast was genuinely concerned about the long term well being of Course, in spite of the fact that it had only happened just seconds before.

Crouse was in a tough race for the puck with Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alex Martinez and although Crouse had the inside track Martinez stuck right there with him in an effort to prevent the young Coyotes forward from getting a scoring chance. Right as they were about to reach the net Martinez gave Crouse a little shove, but it was all that an already off balance Crouse needed to completely lose his balance and go tumbling to the ice. What happened next was nothing short of terrifying as Crouse first collided with the goal post and was then sent spinning into the end boards where he folded up like an accordion upon impact.

The initial impact looked very bad and when we saw the slow motion replay after the fact it looked all that much worse due to the fact that it appeared as though Crouse's head had absorbed the vast majority of that impact. After crashing into the boards Crouse layed on the ice completely motionless looking up at his teammates, and although he was moving his lips it appeared as though he could not move his extremities, obviously a very scary sign. The Coyotes training staff wisely came out and immediately braced his neck but I am hopeful that Crouse has not suffered any serious spinal injuries given what happened next.

After a long period of laying on the ice Crouse was able to regain his feet, if barely, with the help of both his teammates as well as the trainer who initially rushed out onto the ice to help him. No doubt Crouse is going to have to enter the league's concussion protocol as a result of this incident, but hopefully he has avoided more serious injuries.
