The longest active ironman streak in sports is in jeopardy tonight as it appears Jay Bouwmeester will sit out for the Blues. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, Bouwmeester's ironman streak of 737 consecutive games played is the longest currently active in sports, a rather impressive number when you consider he is playing in a sport as physical as hockey. It's not in the same ballpark as say a Call Ripken Jr. Bouwmeester plays in a contact sport that often sees players miss time with upper and lower body injuries. Bouwmeester says he will not play simply to keep his streak alive, he has made it clear if he doesn't feel he will be able to help the team he will sit the game out. From the Post-Dispatch:
“I think if you’re ever at a point where you can’t play and you’re going to be a detriment out there, then you’re not going to play,”
IF Bouwmeester does not play Andrew Cogliano of the Anaheim Ducks will take over as the NHL's Iron Man with 561 games played.
