This may be a rare case of a situation where everyone seems to be on the side of the man who received the game misconduct.

On Sunday night, during a clash between the New York Islanders and the Columbus Blue Jackets, Islanders star forward Mat Barzal was tossed from the game after delivering a vicious looking slash to the foot of the Blue Jackets newest forward, Mason Marchment.

There's no doubt in my mind that the major was the right call here as Barzal took a 2-handed baseball swing at Marchment in what was in my opinion a clear intent to injure. Not only did Barzal deliver the slash with a full swing behind it, but he appeared to target Marchment's skate boot where he knows full well that there is very little protection.

That being said, most fans seem to be empathizing with Barzal here given the reason he delivered such a vicious slash. Prior to the blow from Barzal, Marchment appeared to be repeatedly targeting Islanders star rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer, including delivering a nasty looking trip to Schaefer just moments before the slash.

Here is how it all went down:

Here is a video that gives you a better view of the slash:

Did Barzal do the right thing by sticking up for his teammate? Or did he go a step too far? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
