Brutal comments from Matthew Tkachuk at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
There is no love lost between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers, so much so in fact that the hatred between these two teams was on full display today on the international stage.
During a clash between the United States of America and Germany in the preliminary round of the Men's Hockey Tournament for the 2026 winter Olympic Games, Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk, who is representing the United States at this tournament, was caught on a hot mic making some pretty brutal comments towards a familiar opponent.
That opponent was of course Edmonton Oilers star forward Leon Draisaitl who is playing for his home country of Germany in this tournament. Draisaitl and Tkachuk have clashed in back to back Stanley Cup Finals, and it was the results of those two Finals that Tkachuk used to taunt his opponent on the ice on Sunday. Tkachuk made a clear referenced to the fact that Draisaitl has lost in both of those finals when he mocked him for never coming out on top throughout his career.
"Always the bridesmaid eh Leon?" said Tkachuk mocking his opponent. "Always the bridesmaid, never the bride."
The situation was no doubt made that much worse by the fact that Tkachuk's physically imposing brother Brady was standing right behind him laughing the entire time.
I have no doubt that Draisaitl will use the mockery to fuel his performance on the ice today, and perhaps later in the season as well should these two players cross paths in the Stanley Cup playoffs once again.
