TSN hockey insider Bob Mckenzie joined TSN 1050 radio yesterday afternoon, and when the subject of the future of Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock came up Mckenzie had some interesting comments.
“The Philadelphia Flyers have got... And I’ll tell you what – the way their team is trending, and with Berube... and I really like Craig Berube. And maybe they’re going to pull out of it. And they’ve got a lot of issues there. I think Ron Hextall is looking at the team in terms of what they’re building toward, and everything else. And I’m not sure Mike Babcock wants to go to Philadelphia anymore than he would want to go to Toronto, but they’ve got Claude Giroux and some other pieces there. And they’ve got an owner who’s not going to worry about putting a 5 in front of anybody’s salary, and a lot of zeroes after it for a coach.”
Mike Babcock wouldn't be able to magically fix the Flyers contract issues but there's no question that acquiring the services of  what many believe to be the best coach in the league would be a  feather in the cap of Ed Snider. As Mckenzie mentions in his comments $5 million dollars annually could be the answer, unconfirmed reports have suggested that is the magic number, and Ed Snider has the bankroll to make it happen. However many believe Mike Babcock wants more control over player personnel decisions, and that would mean butting heads with Flyers GM Ron Hextall.
