A bizarre ice issue turns into a full-blown spectacle as crews scramble and the game almost gets postponed
It was chaos in Las Vegas on Thursday night, and not the kind you usually expect from the Golden Knights.
During a tight matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Calgary Flames, tied 3-3, the game came to a stunning halt ahead of the third period due to a bizarre and rare issue with the ice surface.
That’s because a “City of Las Vegas” decal embedded beneath the ice had been lifted during the second intermission, reportedly by the Zamboni, leaving a damaged patch near one of the trapezoids. What followed was something few, if any, had ever seen before.
The ice crew rushed out to assess and repair the damage, but this wasn’t a quick fix. As minutes dragged on, the delay stretched… and stretched… eventually hitting nearly 50 minutes before the two periods.
In true Vegas fashion, the show didn’t stop. Music blasted through the arena, on-ice projections continued, and a full spotlight was placed directly on the ice crew as they worked, turning the repair job into its own kind of spectacle. At one point, captains Mark Stone and Mikael Backlund were brought out to inspect the ice themselves alongside officials.
To fix the surface, the crew repeatedly used a fire extinguisher on the ice even continuing the process during a TV timeout once play resumed.
Before the game was back on, all players skated to the repaired spot to make sure what they were dealing with. Former Flame Rasmus Andersson, now a member of the Knights, took the time during the long delay to catch up with his former teammates.
Eventually, the game did get back underway after the lengthy delay, with Vegas pulling away for a 6-3 win.
Fittingly, on a night like this, the Golden Knights quite literally needed a fire extinguisher to put out the Flames.
