Hayden Hodgson’s latest boarding incident has drawn scrutiny, and his lengthy suspension history could make the NHL’s next decision especially costly.
Hayden Hodgson was assessed a five-minute major for boarding during Thursday night’s game, but the on-ice penalty may only be the beginning of his punishment. The NHL's Department of Player Safety is expected to review the play, and given Hodgson's well-documented suspension history, primarily in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Belleville Senators, a significant suspension could be on the way.
The hit in question targeted Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke, who appeared to be in a vulnerable position near the boards.
What makes this situation even more concerning for Hodgson is his track record. He was reportedly suspended for five games back in February with the Sens’ farm club for a similar type of hit, and that punishment marked his fourth suspension as a professional.
In last night’s hit, Hodgson was skating at full sprint at a player he knew was in a very vulnerable position and exploded through his head. It genuinely feels like Clarke has been very lucky on this ugly play.
We currently await word from the Department of Player Safety, who is expected to have a hearing with Hodgson.
Given Hodgson's extensive suspension history in the AHL and the severity of the hit on Clarke, the league could come down hard. A decision is expected shortly, and it would not be surprising if the punishment is among the longest of the young season.
