Dallas Stars defenseman Nils Lundkvist has likely earned himself a gnarly new scar at the very least, but hopefully it's nothing more serious than that.

Lundkvist was involved in a frankly horrifying incident on Saturday night during Game 4 of the opening round Stanley Cup playoff series between Lundkvist and his Stars and the Minnesota Wild. Strangely enough the incident would occur after Lundkvist had earned a minor penalty, tripping Wild forward Michael McCarron directly in front of the net and directly in view of the National Hockey League officials on the ice.

Unfortunately for Lundkvist however he wouldn't have much time to worry about his penalty, as his trip would have much more serious consequences for the Stars defenseman. Lundkvist tripping McCarron caused him to fall to the ice but, in a cruel twist of fate, Lundkvist would also follow him down to the ice and that is when the horror unfolded.

As McCarron fell his skates would kick up ever so slightly behind him, but that was just enough for Lundkvist to bring his face right down in range of those skates as he fell right behind McCarron. The end result was McCarron's skate slicing across the face of Lundkvist in terrible fashion, forcing the Stars defenseman to rush off the ice.

There was a nasty gash visible on Lundkvist's face as he left the ice, but there's no telling the extent of the damage at this time.
