Things got completely out of hand between the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators Tuesday night.

The two teams erupted into a massive line brawl at the end of the second period after Ridly Greig delivered a wild reverse-check on Alex DeBrincat just before the buzzer. DeBrincat immediately found himself in a fight with Shane Pinto, while Emmitt Finnie dropped the gloves with Jordan Spence as players from both teams rushed into the chaos.

Dylan Larkin got in the mix, and the Red Wings’ former captain clearly wasn’t happy with what happened to DeBrincat. He went after Greig as the scrum exploded around them. And then things got even more interesting.

Nick Cousins appeared to jab at Larkin during the chaos, pointing toward the Detroit forward’s chest while seemingly making a comment about his captaincy.

That exchange added another layer to an already explosive scene, particularly given everything that has happened surrounding Larkin and the Red Wings captaincy this season, since he demanded to be traded out of Detroit. This is his first game since the request this season.

What started with a huge hit on DeBrincat quickly turned into multiple fights, players wrestling along the boards and tempers boiling over just before the second-period horn.

The officials eventually managed to separate everyone, but there was no mistaking the message.

The bad blood between these two teams is very real.

And judging by what happened at the buzzer, the third period could be very interesting.
