The entire exchange was caught on the official’s microphone!
Boston Bruins forward Fraser Minten couldn’t believe what he was hearing Monday night. And as he headed toward the penalty box, he made sure the referee knew it.
During Boston’s game against the Ottawa Senators, Minten was assessed a two-minute penalty for slashing. There was just one problem: he wasn’t the player who committed the infraction. Minten’s reaction said it all.
Clearly confused as he skated toward the box, the Bruins forward immediately called out the referee and told him he had the wrong player. And thanks to the official’s microphone, the entire exchange was caught for everyone to hear.
The video of the bizarre sequence is worth watching in full:
As it turns out, Minten had every reason to be confused. It was his teammate James Hagens who had committed the slashing infraction, not Minten. The penalty call had simply been assigned to the wrong Boston player.
Minten wasn’t about to quietly serve two minutes for something he didn’t do, either. After pointing out the mistake, the referee realized what had happened and Minten was spared the penalty.
It’s one thing to make a mistake on the ice. It’s another when the player immediately calls you out for it… and the entire conversation ends up being broadcast through a hot mic.
