The NHL Board of Player Safety, the utmost in inconsistency when it comes to handing down supplemental discipline, has screwed another call up today. The NHL won’t hand Los Angeles Kings forward Tyler Toffoli a fine or suspension for his hit on Vancouver Canucks winger Alex Burrows, John Hoven reports. Toffoli was given a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct after hitting Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows dangerously from behind into the boards at the L.A. bench. The incident occured in the third period of Saturday afternoon's game between the Kings and Canucks. The worst part of this hit was that it was unnecessary, as Toffoli was leaving the ice for a line change before cross-checking Burrows. Burrows was able to return to the game late in the third period which likely swayed the minds of the Board. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, had this to say last night: “The good news for the Kings player is Burrows returned to the game, which usually calms down any discussion about a suspension,” Friedman said. “The NHL will review this hit, but because it’s a busy day they won’t decide if there’s any kind of hearing until after tonight’s games are over.” I have been watching hockey a long time and although Toffoli has never been suspended, if this isn't worthy of at least a fine, I don't know what is.
