With only 2 playoff spots available in East entering final day of the NHL regular season, one of he teams hoping to clinch one of those spots was dealt a pretty heavy blow on Saturday.
Even if the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins earn a playoff spot, it is “not likely” defenseman Kris Letang will play, general manager Jim Rutherford said.
Letang has been out since March. 28 because of a concussion that occured after a hit into the boards by Arizona's Shane Doan. Letang was hit by Doan and landed awkwardly head-first into the end boards. He was visibly shaken and was sent to a nearby hospital where it was determined he had suffered a concussion. He was released the next day.
“Based on his present condition,” Rutherford said, “it's not likely he'd return this year.”
Needless to say the loss of Letang for the Penguins can not be understated. In the six games Letang has missed since the injury, the Penguins are 1-4-1 in those games and have scored 12 goals.
The Penguins were also unable to clinch a playoff spot yesterday, so their playoff lives are very much up in the air right now.
