On the first biggest day of the offseason...
The Ottawa Senators have had one of the busiest weeks in the NHL, and even their post-free agency media availability could not avoid the chaos.
After trading captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers ahead of the NHL Draft, the Senators moved quickly to reshape their roster, adding goaltender Sam Ersson and bringing back veteran forward Nick Cousins as part of their offseason adjustments.
On Wednesday, general manager Steve Staios met with reporters to discuss the team’s moves and the direction of the franchise following a dramatic stretch that saw Ottawa move on from its captain and begin building a new-look roster. But the conversation took an unexpected turn.
During Staios’ press conference, the power suddenly went out, briefly cutting the media session into darkness.
The moment quickly became one of the lighter highlights of an otherwise intense offseason day. Reporter Graeme Nichols joked afterward that his question may have been “too hot to handle,” adding some humor to an unusual interruption.
While the outage was only a brief distraction, the Senators’ offseason decisions remain very much in the spotlight. Moving Tkachuk was one of the biggest moves of the summer, and Staios now faces the challenge of reshaping the team while keeping Ottawa competitive.
