Sidney Crosby makes history on Sunday night.
History has been made.
On Sunday night, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby took his place in the Penguins record book when he first tied and then surpassed Penguins legend Mario Lemieux.
Crosby entered tonight's game one point shy of the Penguins all-time points record, a record that was held at the time by Lemieux. Crosby would waste no time and began rewriting history when he scored the Penguins first goal of the game, tying the game at 1-1 in the first period.
That was good enough to tie Lemieux's record of 1,723 career points with the Penguins but the record would not remain tied for very long. The Penguins would find themselves on the power play just minutes later and it would be a Crosby slap shot that would lead to a Penguins goal from teammate Rickard Rakell. Crosby would earn himself an assist on the play and as a result overtake Lemieux's all-time record and secure his place as the new Penguins points leader.
Although Crosby is the new record holder it did take him a lot longer to get there, with Crosby needing 1,387 career games to surpass Lemieux. By contrast, Lemieux achieved his astonishing feat of 1,723 points in just 915 games played and that in and of itself is a feat that may never be repeated.
In a great show of class, Lemieux took the time to record a special message for the man who broke his record tonight.
