Fans and teammates left in shock as star center exits unexpectedly..
Sidney Crosby’s night with the Pittsburgh Penguins came to an unexpected halt on Thursday night as he left the ice in the second period against the Ottawa Senators.
The Penguins and Senators, amongst many other Eastern Conference contenders, are battling in a tight playoff race, and every shift counts. Crosby, who recently returned from injury, skated his first shift of the second period before heading straight down the tunnel, leaving fans and teammates stunned.
Eyewitnesses noted that it didn’t appear to be an equipment problem. Instead, Crosby got tangled with a Senators' Nick Cousins, appeared in discomfort and he headed to the bench and was seen speaking with trainers. He only got one quick shift in the second frame before he left.
The Penguins have yet to provide a full update, leaving the hockey world speculating about the severity of the issue and whether he might return.
Crosby’s sudden exit raises concerns in a critical stretch for Pittsburgh. With games in the playoff hunt being more crucial than ever, the team will need to adjust quickly without their superstar on the ice. He had recently returned to the Penguins lineup, against the Carolina Hurricanes, recording a goal and an assist after missing 11 games with a lower-body injury. The captain had gotten injured, suffering a torn MCL at the 2026 Winter Olympics when representing Canada.
Moments after this exit down the tunnel, the Penguins announced that Crosby would not return to the game. And now, everyone in Pittsburgh holds their breath.
After the shootout win over the Senators was seen in a suit, welcoming his teammates down the tunnel. Insider Josh Yohe said he did not look in extreme discomfort.
