A bizarre exchange with Andrei Svechnikov quickly turned into must-see chaos on the ice
Hockey got weird, and somehow funny, during a heated moment between Sidney Crosby and Andrei Svechnikov in Wednesday night’s matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hurricanes in Carolina.
In the middle of the action, as Crosby found to be challenged a little too hard, he drilled Svechnikov with a sneaky punch behind the player, sparking an immediate reaction. Svechnikov answered back with a slash, and just like that, the officials had their hands full sorting it all out.
When the dust settled, Crosby was handed a two-minute minor for roughing. Svechnikov, however, took the extra penalty: two minutes for holding the stick and another two for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving the Penguins a late power play with just over 30 seconds left in the second period.
But the best part? Crosby’s reaction.
Sitting in the penalty box, the Penguins captain couldn’t help but laugh. He even held up two fingers toward fans in the stands, clearly referencing the extra penalties that went against Svechnikov. It was equal parts chirp and comedy, turning a tense moment into something fans couldn’t get enough of.
Watch it all here below:
Classic Crosby: competitive, a little mischievous, and always in the middle of the action. Back after missing 11 games with a lower-body injury, Crosby was everywhere on the ice and recorded the tying goal earlier in the second period.
