There was a rather controversial call in the NHL last night during a game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadians that has led to many asking if it's time for coach's challenge in the NHL. The NFL has incorporated this type of challenge for several season now and it has proven to be an effective solution to help reduce human error on calls. The Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk scored a highlight reel goal during the third period, a goal that would have put the Wings up 2-0 with less than 10 minutes to go in the period. However the play was ruled no goal because of some incidental contact between the Red Wings' Justin Abelkader and Montreal goalie Carey Price. However when you look closely at the play, Price is the one who slides into Abelkader, and Abelkader's contact actually prevents Price from moving further away from where the puck eventually went into the net. Datsyuk had completely fooled Price on the play, pulling a spin-o-rama type move sending the puck into the side of the net opposite the direction of Price's momentum. Red Wings coaching staff and fans alike were clearly unhappy with the call, and while a coach's challenge may not have led to the goal being overturned, it clearly would have helped appease the Red Wings faithful.
