The trade that sent longtime Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks early Friday morning didn’t just shake the roster: it shook the entire dressing room.

In what may go down as one of the most emotional moments of this year’s NHL Trade Deadline, Washington dealt the veteran blue liner to Anaheim in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in either 2026 or 2027, along with a 2027 third-round selection.

And the move came just hours after the Capitals also parted ways with veteran forward Nic Dowd. In less than 24 hours, Washington lost two of the most respected voices in the room.

For players who built their careers alongside Carlson, the moment hit hard. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin didn’t hide how painful the day felt.

“It’s a sad day. Probably the toughest day in my career… We grew up together.”

Few players know what life without Carlson in a Capitals sweater looks like, especially Tom Wilson, who admitted the moment felt surreal. Wilson was visibly emotional while speaking about his longtime teammate, explaining that a Capitals team without No. 74 is almost impossible to imagine.

“There’s certain guys in the locker room that are just kind of a North Star… everyone in this room is proud to be a Capital, and Johnny emphasized that.”

The human side of the move seemed to weigh on him the most. Wilson said the hardest part is realizing the friendships built over years, including watching Carlson’s children grow up, are suddenly interrupted.

“Today sucks, it’s brutal. I’m sure there’s some guys that want to cry. That’s the reality of it. Today you can cry, and tomorrow you got to wake up and be a big boy and go out and play hockey.”

Still, Wilson made it clear the Capitals won’t let the emotional blow derail their season.

“We’re professionals and we’ve got to do our job and we’re not going to roll over… we believe in this group.”

He even joked that he hopes in a decade the two of them can sit down together, share a cigar, and talk about the incredible ride they experienced in Washington.

Carlson himself acknowledged the moment felt strange from the other side. In his first interview with ESPN after the deal, the veteran defenseman spoke about the bonds he built with the core of the Capitals.

“Osh, obviously, Tom and Ovi and Backstrom as well — those are kind of the longest guys I’ve ever played with and have so many meaningful friendships with. I’ve seen players come and go a lot in my career and when it’s you, it just feels so much different.”

Despite the trade, the door may not be completely closed on Carlson’s future in Washington.

League sources indicate the Capitals had already been discussing internally whether they might bring him back next season. A deal with Anaheim doesn’t necessarily rule that out, though the debate would likely center on term, with Carlson believed to be seeking a two-year contract.

For now, however, the reality is sinking in. For the first time in nearly two decades, the Capitals will move forward without one of the pillars of their locker room. And judging by the emotional reaction from teammates, the next few days in Washington won’t be easy…
