A nasty sequence involving Juraj Slafkovsky sent tempers flaring, with multiple penalties handed out.
The Montreal Canadiens found themselves in the middle of a heated scene on Wednesday night when a collision on the ice quickly escalated into something far uglier.
What started as a physical play spiralled into a full scrum involving multiple players from both sides. Officials were forced to step in and sort through the chaos.
It all started when Habs’ Juraj Slafkovsky was hit at centre ice by Caps’ Ivan Miroshnichenko, and then his head bounced off Tom Wilson as he fell, pinballing between the two players.
Seeing that Wilson does not have the best reputation around the league, Slafkovsky’s teammates immediately took exception.
Several penalties were handed out in the aftermath, with tempers clearly running high on both benches.
While the five-minute major was taken off the board because Wilson did not target or hit anyone in the head, Miroshnichenko was sent off for roughing, while the Canadiens lost Alex Carrier and Kaiden Guhle, both for roughing.
Afterwards, as you could have expected, Arber Xhekaj and Wilson were jawing at each other now at the whistle.
The good news amidst the chaos is that Slafkovsky left the ice but returned only minutes later, seemingly okay.
