Tom Wilson drops the gloves as he comes to the defense of Nathan MacKinnon!
There were questions about whether or not Washington Capitals enforcer Tom Wilson would be able to have the same impact for Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games that he does for the Capitals in the National Hockey League. Fighting is strictly prohibited at International Ice Hockey Federation events, which of course includes the Winter Olympic Games, and many felt that this would limit Wilson's impact as a physically dominant player on the ice.
It appears those concerns were misplaced.
On Sunday, as Canada was blowing out France during a preliminary game at the Olympic tournament, Wilson showed that international rules won't slow him down one bit as he dropped the gloves with a French player he felt had crossed the line. France's Pierre Crinon delivered a big hit to Colorado Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon behind the French net during the game's third period, and it was clear from that moment that Wilson was locked in on Crinon as a target.
The following faceoff would see Wilson immediately charge Crinon and deliver a hit along the end boards, before a scuffle broke out between the two men in which Wilson would drop the gloves.
You can see the replay of the brief exchange just below:
Wilson and Crinon both received a game misconduct for their troubles and now only time will tell if either Wilson or Crinon will face any potential suspensions as a result of their actions today.
Wilson is much more than just an enforcer for team Canada, serving as a winger on the team's top line alongside Connor McDavid, and he displayed that by opening the scoring for Canada on Sunday.
