Nonstop drama in Capitals-Mammoth game that spirals out of control
It was absolute mayhem and Tom Wilson was right at the center of it all.
In the Washington Capitals’ 7-4 win over the Utah Mammoth on Thursday night, Wilson recorded a career-high 21 penalty minutes in a game that completely spiralled out of control. From the opening period to the final buzzer, it felt like something was always about to erupt. And usually did.
The chaos began late in the first period after a brutal boarding hit from Brandon Tanev on Matt Roy. Wilson and Trevor van Riemsdyk immediately jumped in, with Wilson landing heavy punches that left Tanev bloodied. The two continued jawing face-to-face, with Wilson even mocking him with a “turtle” gesture as tensions boiled over.
Both players were handed misconducts and sent off early. But that was only the beginning.
At the end of the second period, Wilson delivered a massive hit on Jack McBain, sending his stick flying and reigniting the Mammoth bench. The call was downgraded after review, but the damage was already done.
Then came the third period.
Lawson Crouse went straight after Wilson, dropping the gloves in another heated exchange. The penalties piled up, and Utah completely unraveled as Wilson continued to get under their skin.
By the final horn, the game had racked up a staggering 82 penalty minutes, with Wilson alone accounting for 21: surpassing his previous career high.

Love him or hate him, Wilson once again proved he can take over a game without scoring a single goal. The Caps won 7-4.
