According to a report from Sportsnet's John Shannon the injury to Kris Letang is far more serious then was originally reported by the Penguins. Shannon is rpeorting that a source within the team has confirmed that Letang will be out indefinitely after he showed signs of concussion symptoms after taking a questionable hit from the Flyers Jack Rinaldo. A couple of points to make with this news, first the news is obviously bad for the Penguins, but it's likely also going to impact the Flyers. Due to the All-Star break Rinaldo's hearing was only scheduled for Monday meaning that the NHL's Player Safety Department, which is known for handing out punishment based on severity of injuries, will likely take this new information into account. It would be little to no surprise if this resulted in a more severe suspension for Rinaldo. The other salient point here is the fact that according to multiple reports the Penguins medical staff made a game time decision on whether or not Letang would play. The same medical staff that allegedly was negligent in spreading a mumps infection to a children's hospital earlier this season, and a medical staff that was publicly criticized for their handling of Sidney Crosby's head injuries in the past. It's becoming more and more difficult to believe that the Penguins medical staff is a competent one.
