Dec. 23, 1979, is a day that made the Bruins an infamous franchise in the NHL. After pulling a victory away from the New York Rangers by a score of 4-3, some of the Rangers took exception to way it went down and a scrum ensued. Pretty normal right? Wrong. After Phil Esposito of the Rangers smashed his stick on the ice and skated off to the locker room, Al Secord sucker punches the Rangers’ Ulf Nilsson.“I remembered the sucker punch he gave me earlier in the game, so I thought, an eye for an eye, and I suckered him,” Secord said. A Rangers fan then thought it would be a good idea to hit the Bruins Stan Jonathan with a rolled-up program and steals his stick. Wrong move. Bruins forward Terry O’Reilly took exception to a fan assaulting one of his teammates and climbs over the glass to get some revenge.Peter McNab, who had only four penalty minutes the previous season, followed his linemate into the stands. “There was no way he was going to strike one of my teammates and steal his stick, wield it like a weapon and then disappear into the crowd and go to a local bar with a souvenir and a great story,” O’Reilly said. “As soon as I got him into a bearhug, I felt like I was being pummeled by multiple people. All I could do was cover up.” Mike Milbury and Mcnab managed to get at the fan as he attempted to flee the scene.“I grabbed his shoe, took a little tug on it, and then sort of double pumped,” Milbury said. “I don’t know if I hesitated for a minute because I thought I’d be vilified for the next 30 years, but I gave him a cuff across the leg, and then I did what I thought was probably the most egregious thing of all: I threw his shoe on the ice.” In all 18 Boston Bruins went into the stands and Terry O'Reilly was suspended 8 games with Mcnab and Milbury being suspended for 6 a piece. Every Bruin was fined 500$ except Gerry Cheevers who was already in the locker room when the brawl erupted. When asked why Cheevers did not return to the ice, he laughingly stated "I was already on my second beer."
