Something very strange happened last night in Denver.
A fourth-line fighter got first star honours after picking up 30 penalty minutes and getting kicked out of the game. Colorado’s Cody McLeod fought twice, played 8:58 and took four shots on net to nab top honours on NHL.com.
I guess the fans thought that McLeod’s dust-up with Jason Demers in the third period was the game changer. McLeod moved Demers away from his goalie and shoved him up against the boards, then slipped in a quick left hook for good measure. That shot touched off a melee between the Avs and Stars, even as Demers held his face with a bleeding lip.
Demers went back at McLeod during the TV timeout a few moments later, punching him in the face while he was speaking to a referee. After a melee once again ensued, Demers continued to hit McLeod while the referees restrained him.
All this considered, McLeod earned himself the first star of the game. For real.

It's the fans that decide on the three stars, so the shot-for-shot clearly won them over. You can't help but feel that this is a little bush league considering that there were players who actually won the game for the Avs'.
The hometown goon had his moment.
