New York Islanders forward Matt Martin is beginning to make a name for himself in the NHL, unfortunately it's for all the wrong reasons. Martin may soon find himself in hot water with the NHL's Department of Player Safety. The New York Islanders forward received a five-minute major and was ejected during the first period of Tuesday's game in Dallas following this knee-on-knee collision with Stars defenseman Trevor Daley. Daley left the game and did not return. Stars head coach Lindy Ruff updated Daley's status following the game and said the defenseman could be out weeks. Daley is in the midst of a career year, having recorded 16 goals and 33 assists while averaging 23:30 of ice time. The injury just adds to the likelihood Martin gets a call from the Department of Player Safety. Handing out a major penalty means there was enough contact there for the referees to deem it an ejection-worthy offense. Martin is a repeat offender, having been suspended twice – once in 2010, once in 2011 – for a total of six games. Martin is not known for being a dirty player in general. He’s led the league in hits for the past four seasons and has not been suspended once. It’s impossible to know what Martin’s intent was, but it appeared he showed immediate remorse for the hit. Unfortunately for him, he will likely sit some time for this one.
