This happened in Switzerland on Thurdsay, the ZSC Lions were playing against the HC Fribourg-Gotteron. 14 minutes into the 1st period, Derek Smith misjudged a tackle and he hitted the board "ass first". The 30 years-old defenseman played for the Senators and the Flames in the NHL until last season. He was targeting Marc-Antoine Pouliot, who got away and had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher. Reports state that Smith suffered a fracture of a vertebra and will be forced to miss over 3 months, it's even possible that his season is over.
