You may not be a fan of the Washington Capitals, but this story will undoubtedly make you respect the kindness of their hearts. In an amazing show of solidarity and support, the Caps' are rallying around a young boy who is in critical condition after a terrible accident. From Capitals blog Russian Machine Never Breaks has reported the story of Bensten, a six-year-old Capitals fan. Bensten was sledding at his home in McLean, Va., when he slid into the street and a passing car struck him. Following the accident, he was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he remained in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. Bensten's uncle Tyler was able to contact the Capitals through the power of social media, and following Friday night’s win over the Anaheim Ducks, winger Tom Wilson had some special words for Bensten. “Every given night, we’re fighting for him,” Wilson said. “There’s a couple guys that have been aware of what’s going on, and we just want him to know that we’re playing for him. It’s pretty sad to see that happen to a kid.” CSN Washington’s Jill Sorensen reported late Friday that Bensten has opened his eyes, shown signs of movement, and displayed recognition for his surroundings. Sorensen added that Ovechkin had signed a puck and stick for Bensten, which was delivered to the young fan by a member of the Capitals organization. The Capitals have also sent Bensten an autographed jersey and a hand signed card from the entire team – incredibly heartwarming gestures from an extremely thoughtful team. “We’re hoping he gets better soon and we can meet him,” said defenseman John Carlson. “He seems like a really passionate kid and a local kid that loves hockey. We’re praying for him and hope he can get on the road to a good recovery.” What a great bunch of guys.
