There's a saying in sports, a good referee is the kind you never notice during a game, unfortunately that wasn't the case last night in Ottawa. Ottawa was denied a game tying goal, and as a result were subsequently eliminated from the post season against Montreal. To be perfectly honest it was a blown call, Carey Price never had control of the puck, but the NHL rules clearly state that a referee is to blow the whistle if he believes a save has been made and he doesn't have sight of the puck. In this scenario you have to give the referee the benefit of the doubt, it sucks that fans had a fantastic series tarnished by an official, but bleep happens. However what is perhaps most disturbing about this play is that just a few seconds prior to the goal being disallowed the same officiating crew blew another call. Montreal were caught with too many men on the ice. You can hear the broadcast team criticize "ugly changes" from Montreal at the start of this video highlighting the disallowed goal. Now here's an angle that provides a better look at the too many men on the ice from Montreal just seconds before the disallowed goal. It has been a terrible season for officiating, and it has now spilled over into the post season, hopefully fans will make their voices heard and pressure the NHL to crack down on poor officiating.
