In a truly scary incident a player was rushed to the hospital after being laid out with a late hit and sent crashing awkwardly into the end boards.
Penguins defenseman Kris Letang was taken to the hospital after a collision with Shane Doan in Saturday's game against the Arizona Coyotes. The hit in and of itself was not the dirtiest hit we have seen this season, but the split second nature of the entire incident has left many with mixed feelings regarding the legality.
Penguins defenseman Ian Cole told the
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Josh Yohe after the game.
"
Doan was running around like an idiot today."
Doan was remorseful after the game. However, his reputation does not work in his favour in this case. He told
Arizona Republic’s Sarah McLellan:
"That’s awful. When it happened, I could tell the way he went into the boards was awkward."
"I just went to make sure I got a piece of him so he couldn't jump by me. ... We have to finish our check on him."
"You never ever want to see anybody like that, especially a guy of his caliber and obviously everything he's went through."

Letang is undergoing evaluations at a hospital and the team doesn’t anticipate more news until Sunday. In any case the outlook is not optimistic, just take one look at Letang and you see he's in some serious agony.
As you can see, opinions differ:

No matter where you stand in the hit, it was late if even by a half-second. The rules dictate that it should be reviewed by the Board of Player Safety. One thing is certain, the Penguins took a huge hit with the loss of their best d-man.

Here is the hit in question.
